BS 7671 Amendment 4: PoE in Healthcare Facilities

Amendment 4Section 716 — Power over EthernetHealthcare Facilities

Healthcare facilities are among the heaviest users of PoE technology. Patient monitoring systems, nurse call terminals, IP-connected infusion pumps, wireless access points for clinical applications, and IP CCTV all rely on PoE delivery. Amendment 4's Section 716 interacts with the revised Section 710 (Medical Locations) to create specific requirements for PoE installations in clinical environments.

The critical consideration is that PoE devices in Group 1 and Group 2 medical locations are connected to patients or support patient care. Section 710 requires that all electrical equipment in these zones meets enhanced safety requirements, including earth leakage limits and supply continuity. Section 716 adds the thermal dimension — PoE cable bundles serving medical devices must not experience temperature rises that could degrade cable performance or affect the reliability of supply to patient-connected equipment.

In Group 2 medical locations (operating theatres, intensive care), where the IT system (medical IT) provides the supply, PoE devices connected to the medical IT system via PoE switches must have the PoE power consumption included in the insulation monitoring device (IMD) load assessment. This is a new interaction not previously addressed — the IMD must be rated for the total load including PoE current draw.

Cable routing in hospitals presents specific derating challenges. Hospital ceiling voids and vertical risers often carry very large numbers of data cables — 100 or more in main distribution routes — alongside power cables, medical gas pipework, and HVAC ductwork. Section 716 derating factors for these large bundles can be severe, requiring careful route planning and potentially separate containment for PoE and non-PoE data cables.

Fire performance of PoE cables in hospitals is also affected by the temperature consideration. NHS HTM 06-01 requires LSZH cables in healthcare premises. Section 716 notes that the temperature rating of LSZH cables (typically 70°C for standard grades) must account for the PoE heating contribution, which may necessitate using cables rated to 90°C in large PoE bundles.

ECalPro's Cable Size Calculator applies Section 716 derating factors with Section 710 medical location requirements, providing compliant cable sizing for healthcare PoE installations.

Compliance Steps

  1. 1
Identify PoE devices in Group 1 and Group 2 medical locations per Section 710 classifications
  2. 2
Include PoE current draw in IMD load assessment for medical IT system circuits in Group 2 locations
  3. 3
Apply Section 716 derating factors to hospital data cable bundles, especially in risers with 100+ cables
  4. 4
Verify LSZH cable temperature rating accounts for PoE heating contribution in large bundles
  5. 5
Size PoE cables using ECalPro Calculator with combined Section 716 and Section 710 requirements
