Lightning Protection Risk Assessment Record (Excel)
Free download · Excel (.xlsx)
IEC 62305-2 requires a documented risk assessment to determine whether lightning protection is needed and to what level. This Excel template structures the complete risk assessment process with columns for Structure ID, Location (lat/long), Dimensions (L x W x H in metres), Ground Flash Density Ng (flashes/km²/year), Collection Area Ad (m²), Expected Annual Lightning Events Nd, individual Risk Components (R1 loss of human life, R2 loss of public service, R3 loss of cultural heritage, R4 economic loss), Total Risk R, Tolerable Risk RT per IEC 62305-2 Table 7, Protection Required (Y/N), Lightning Protection Level (LPL I-IV), selected Protection Measures, and IEC 62305 Clause Reference. Built-in formulas auto-calculate the collection area from structure dimensions and compare total risk against tolerable thresholds. Use alongside ECalPro's lightning protection calculator for comprehensive risk analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find ground flash density (Ng) data?
Flash density maps are published by national meteorological services. IEC 62305-2 Annex A provides a world map. Typical values range from 0.5 (Scandinavia) to 15+ (tropical regions). Use the most recent local data available.
What are the four risk components?
R1 = risk of loss of human life, R2 = risk of loss of public service, R3 = risk of loss of cultural heritage, R4 = risk of economic loss. Each is calculated from the number of dangerous events and probability of damage. Only R1 is mandatory; others depend on the structure type.
How do I determine if protection is required?
Compare the calculated total risk R against the tolerable risk RT from IEC 62305-2 Table 7. If R > RT, protection is required. Select the Lightning Protection Level (I-IV) that reduces R below RT. LPL I provides the highest protection.
