Earthing Resistance Test Record (Excel)
Free download · Excel (.xlsx)
Earthing resistance measurements must be recorded with sufficient detail for trend analysis, regulatory compliance, and fault investigation. This Excel template provides a structured test record with columns for Electrode Reference, Location, Electrode Type (rod/plate/strip/grid), Dimensions, Soil Type, Soil Resistivity (ohm-metre), Test Method (fall-of-potential/clamp-on/stake-less), Instrument Make and Model, Calibration Date, Probe Spacing (m), three individual Readings (ohm), Average Reading (ohm), Weather Conditions, Soil Moisture (dry/damp/wet), Acceptance Criteria (ohm), Pass/Fail Status, Date Tested, and Tested By. Auto-calculates the average from three readings and flags results that exceed the acceptance threshold. Essential for initial commissioning records and periodic re-testing comparison — plot resistance trends over years to detect electrode degradation before a fault reveals it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why take three readings?
Three readings at different probe orientations (or at 90° rotation) confirm measurement consistency. If any reading varies by more than 30% from the average, the measurement should be repeated with adjusted probe spacing to ensure you are outside the resistance area of the electrode.
What is an acceptable earth resistance?
Acceptance criteria depend on the application: typically <1 ohm for substations (IEEE 80), <5 ohms for commercial buildings (BS 7671), <10 ohms for residential (AS/NZS 3000). Enter your project-specific acceptance criteria in the template.
Which test method should I use?
The fall-of-potential (3-point) method per IEEE 81 is the most accurate for individual electrodes. Clamp-on testers are convenient for multi-electrode systems where disconnection is impractical. The template supports both methods.
